Our
neighborhoods applaud Chairman Truehill
For his thoughtful assessment of this project.
Comments of Dr. Marshall Truehill Jr., Chairman
New Orleans City Planning Commission, 1/27/04
I drove the neighborhood today, and drove around the site. . . . I think
that [a 14-story high-rise] is completely out of scale with this neighborhood.
I drove on Pearl Street, Huso Street, and Short Street. The streets are
very narrow. A 14-story building would completely overshadow this neighborhood.
. . .
There is no way under the sun that a building that tall [could live]
next to some of these cottages. . . . Someone would say "Who plopped
this building down in the middle of this neighborhood?"
And as some of the neighbors have said some of these houses have been
there for 100 years. It's just too small of a footprint, I think, to put
a building of this size in that neighborhood.
I think that we need to protect the character of the neighborhood and
afford the residents who have been living there all this time the protection
that they need, and the investments that they have made.
This is a great condominium but I don't think that it belongs in that
spot.
So I would have to vote against it.
